Shock your Cellulite!

No one wants their legs to look like "hail damage" aka cellulite. Statistics tell us that over 90% of women suffer from cellulite.  What most people don't know is that there are quite a few ways to treat and prevent this cosmetic nightmare!

 

Cellulite's appearance is something dreaded and there are numerous "cures" available online with a quick search. However, these topical treatments do not do anything to treat the underlying cause.  They may work in the short term, but as a naturopathic doctor my job is to look for the cause and treat the whole person!

 

One of the biggest contributing factors to the development of cellulite is owed to a lack of circulation in the area.  When there is lack of blood flow and inflammation, the structure of the collagen changes and allows the fat underneath to peek out in unsightly ways. 

 

 

The 3 most important ways to prevent cellulite:

1. Get moving!  Cellulite is more prominent in those who have a sedentary lifestyle.  This means sitting for prolonged periods of time makes it 100% more likely that you are going to suffer from hail damage on your posterior.  Sitting is the new smoking, didn't you hear?

 

 

2.  Dry Skin Brushing.  Used for detoxification and to increase lymph drainage, you can put this to good work to increase circulation in the areas that need it most.  Use a soft bristled brush and sweep gently over the skin of the upper legs and abdomen.  Remember to always aim the strokes upward towards the heart.

 

3. Control your blood sugar and insulin. Excess insulin causes you to store fat! When someone has insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes, they are many times more likely to have cellulite.  (as if we need another reason to prevent or treat blood sugar issues). Normalizing your blood sugar and insulin also reduce inflammation so its a double whammy to knock out cellulite!

 

Once significant cellulite is present, its going to need a therapy to resurface the tissue changes already present while you are working on the prevention angle. Shockwave therapy is your best bet to improve the lumpy appearance of visible cellulite. Several studies have shown that shockwave treatment shows consistent results in the reduction of the appearance of cellulite.

 

Shockwave therapy consists of sending (mostly) painless shockwaves through the skin that break up the misshapen collagen fibers at the source.  These shockwaves also increase blood flow which contributes to the remodeling of appearance after breakdown.  I wish it was a one time treatment but most people need between 6-12 treatments applied 1-2 times per week to get the best results.
